A rare and sought-after collector's item among the variegata-lovers. The Paraiso Verde is already striking for its elongated leaves with spotted variegation, but this 'Albo'-form adds something exceptional: snow-white sectors and stripes that contrast beautifully with the deep green leaves.
Origin
The name Paraiso Verde literally means "green paradise," and refers to the lush appearance of the plant. The exact origin of this cultivar is unclear, but it is believed to have arisen from a spontaneous mutation within cultivated lines of Philodendron Central or South America. The rare 'Albo' form is even more selective and difficult to propagate than the usual light green-spotted varieties.
Characteristics
- Elongated, narrow leaves with a wavy leaf margin.
- Unpredictable, white to creamy white variegation occurring as spots, marbling or broad sectors.
- Sometimes light green to yellow shading, giving the leaves a three-dimensional effect.
- Compact, slightly pendulous growth form that grows up as a climbing plant with support.
The 'Albo' varies greatly from leaf to leaf and from plant to plant, making each plant unique. Full white leaves may occur, but are delicate and shorter-lived.
Care
Light
Bright, indirect light is essential. The more light (without bright sun), the more likely white variegation will be preserved. In too dark conditions, the plant may regress to greener leaves.
Temperature
Between 20-28 °C is ideal. Avoid cold air currents and temperatures below 15 °C.
Substrate
Use an airy, fast-draining mixture of fine bark, coconut chips, perlite and a little sphagnum. Allow excess water to drain easily.
Humidity
Preferably 60-80%. The white parts are more susceptible to drying out and leaf damage at low humidity.
Nutrition
During the growing season, a light gift of plant food every two to three weeks. Avoid over-fertilization: this encourages mainly green growth at the expense of variegation.
Watering
Water as soon as the top layer of the substrate feels dry. Always use demineralized water to avoid damage to the variegated parts. Do not leave water at the bottom of the pot.
Flowering
Flowering is extremely rare in this variety and is usually not pursued. The plant is especially valued for its unique leaf markings and growth form.
